Our pioneer and visionary spirit allowed us to secure vineyards on some of the most exceptional terroir within the Marlborough region. With their diversity and their quality, Cloudy Bay’s vineyards represent the essence of the region and embody it in wine. Grapes from the Wairau Valley bring the punch and the intense flavours, while the fruits from the Southern Valley ensure elegance and refinement. A rich palette of terroirs that provides nuances of aroma and flavours, bringing complexity to the wines.
Welcome to Cloudy Bay, one of the first five wineries to have ventured in Marlborough - back to the mid eighties -, and above all the one who put New Zealand in the wine map thanks to its early wide spread attractive Sauvignon Blanc.
In 2010, the Cloudy Bay winemaking team tasked themselves with a new challenge by embarking on a mission to make world class wine with one of the most complicated grapes - Pinot Noir - in Central Otago. Identified as unsuitable for grape growing up to the mid 1980's, this challenging region, driven by extreme conditions, is not an easy terroir to tame. Whereas the site selection is critical, we managed to secure vineyards in the most precious places of the region, the finest terroirs of the Cromwell Basin - namely Northburn and Calvert Vineyards.
